Postal workers to make plea to the Queen
Postal workers from the county will be sending 83rd birthday greetings to the Queen on Tuesday with a message urging her to keep the postal service public.
Communication Workers Union officials will send birthday cards to Her Majesty on behalf of members asking her to support their campaign to stop the partial privatisation of Royal Mail.
They say the Government proposal would result in a third of the public sector company being sold to a foreign competitor.
CWU Branch Secretary for Northamptonshire Mick Fitzmaurice said: "Postal workers are proud to deliver the Queen's mail.
"If privatisation goes ahead it will lose its status as a valued institution with the priority switching from public service to private profit.
"The Royal Mail has been with us for over 350 years and is part of the fabric of our country which we must ensure stays together, fully integrated and wholly within the public sector.
"We hope the Queen will join with us and urge her Government to drop its plans to sell off part of the industry."
During the past two months, postal workers in Corby have staged demonstrations in the town centre protesting against the plans.
