Possible third gym as fitness bug bites

Rushden is on a health kick as plans for a third gym in the town have been unveiled.

Earlier this year, two new gyms opened in the town – Morton's Personal Fitness Club in Rushden High Street and Elite Personal Training in Duck Street.

Now, a third new gym could be opening.

A planning application has been submitted to East Northamptonshire Council by the Rushden Boxing and Muay Thai Kickboxing Club for a warehouse depot in Albert Road to be transformed into a gym and boxing club.

Eric Jones, who is behind the plans, says if it is approved there will be space for boxing and muay thai training as well as a gym area for weightlifting and it will cater for about 120 people.

He said: "We applied for permission to change the use of the warehouse because we use the Athletic Club for our training and we have outgrown it.

"We hope it is approved as I think the club is of great value to Rushden. We not only have a lot of adults getting fit at the club but we train kids from the age of eight and it has really helped get them off the street and teaches them respect."

Mr Jones can see why gyms are opening up across the town and thinks it is of great benefit to people.

He said: "I have seen over the past year people are trying more and more to get fit. Especially because things are hard at the moment, people don't want to stay home but they can't afford to go out so getting fit has become the cheaper option."

Tracey Smith, of Rose Avenue, in Rushden, walks to get fit.

She said: "There must be a demand for it if so many gyms are opening up. It is a good thing that people are trying to get fit, but it surprises me that with the credit crunch so many people are going to gym instead of walking, which costs nothing."

A decision on the planning application is yet to be made by the district council.
