Popular lifestyle scheme expands
A major programme to get people healthy in Corby has had to be extended due to popular demand.
Corby Council has had to add three extra days to its existing weight management and activity scheme at West Glebe Park as well as introduce two further events at other venues in the town.
It means people of all ages in the town are acting on the encouragement of the Swap programme and are choosing to improve their health and wellbeing.
Swap stands for Stop smoking, Weight management, Active lifestyles and Practical cookery.
Leader of Corby Council Pat Fawcett said: "The Swap programme is extremely popular and we are delighted with the way that it has expanded across the borough.
"A lot of adults want to get healthy and active but it is all about being accessible.
"Swap sessions take place at a variety of times throughout the day and evening, are held at a number of venues, cost just 2 and are something positive the whole family can take part in."
During the classes, top of the range Tanita body composition analysers are used to give a detailed breakdown of weight and provide an easy way to track goals week by week.
The session also includes a fun exercise class designed to suit different age ranges and fitness abilities.
One element recently added to the sessions involves teaching families how to cook nutritious and affordable meals.
Attendees have looked at how much they can save on a particular meal by cooking it themselves, rather than buying a ready-made meal or a
takeaway.
West Glebe Pavilion's Wednesday session had 90 people attending, prompting the council to open it up to four days due to demand.
The authority has also launched a similar activity day at two of the town's community centres and sessions in a further two villages.
A recently released Department of Health profile for the town said people's health was "generally significantly worse than the England average".
It found that almost a third of adults in the borough were obese and that only 20 per cent ate healthily.
Classes at West Glebe take place between Monday and Thursday, with a special session for families on Wednesdays.
At Kingswood Community Centre on Mondays and at Stephenson Way Community Centre on Wednesdays, weight management and activities – one for women and one for men – run from 1pm to 2pm.
Swap has also now moved through to the villages of Rockingham, Gretton and Cottingham. In August this will extend to Great Oakley and East Carlton Park.
