Poppies fan saved by off-duty doctor and volunteers at derby game
The swift actions of doctors, stewards and fans helped save the life of a Kettering Town supporter who collapsed during Monday's derby game.
The male fan, who has not been named, collapsed and stopped breathing during the second half of the Poppies' encounter with Rushden & Diamonds.
Stewards, fans, St John Ambulance volunteers and club doctors Dave Thomas and Clive Shackleton rushed to the man's aid when he collapsed around 4.30pm.
Mr Shackleton was off duty and watching the game as a fan when he responded to the calls for help.
An emergency announcement was made over the loudspeaker system asking all supporters in the main stand to remain in their seats at the final whistle to allow the patient to be taken to an ambulance.
The supporter is now in a stable condition at Kettering General Hospital.
Poppies operations director Tony Reeves praised the actions of all involved.
He said: "Everyone came to his aid very quickly.
"I spoke to the man's daughter this morning and it is clear that without the swift action of everyone concerned he would not have made it.
"He stopped breathing. They probably saved his life."
Mr Reeves said the family of the man had told him his condition was stable and tests were being carried out to find the exact cause.
He said: "I went down to the hospital and spoke to a family member who said his main concern was that he couldn't find his coat with his beloved season ticket in it!
"Every one of our stewards has first aid training and I was very impressed with their reaction. It is a big difference between doing it on a training course and doing it in reality."
A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said they attended the ground just after 4.30pm and transferred the patient to Kettering General Hospital.
