Pool clocks up its 100,000th visitor

The 100,000th swimmer to dive into the new Corby swimming pool was surprised by town leaders.

Kai Warren, 12, became the 100,000th customer at the new international pool after it opened this summer.

The Evening Telegraph reported earlier this month how the number of swimmers visiting the pool was beyond all the expectations of councillors – so they decided to reward the person who hit the landmark figure.

Kingswood School pupil Kai visited the pool on Friday and was given a bag of goodies by chairman of the Corby and East Midlands International Pool board Cllr Peter McEwan, and Corby Council lead member for community Cllr John McGhee.

Kai, who lives in Corby, received a water bottle, T-shirt and swimming bag as well as a month's pass to the 20m pool.

He said: "I was very surprised and happy to be the 100,000th swimmer and get the prizes. I come to the pool quite a lot and so I am glad to have a free pass.

"I go to the pool every Friday with my friends. I like it much better than the old one because there's more room to swim."

Cllr McEwan said: "The pool has been a great success and already, after just four months of being open to the public, we have welcomed our 100,000th swimmer.

"The popularity of the pool is growing week-in, week-out and we are now seeing swimmers travelling from as far as Peterborough and Leicester to enjoy our facilities."

Corby's new 50m pool is included in both the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Pre-Games Training Camp Guides and is a regional competition facility.

And the pool is hosting the Great Britain Diving Federation's Winter Masters Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

The competition brings expert divers aged from 16 to 87-years-old together to compete.

Competitors will be welcomed from as far away as Italy, Holland and Germany.

The diving end of the pool will be closed for the e weekend and the fun pool end of the 50 metre pool and learner pool will be closed for swimming lessons, from 9am to midday, on both days.

Corby residents can watch the exciting event for free from the spectators' area.

Cllr McGhee said: "Our pool is building quite a reputation for being a world class venue to host events.

"I want to urge as many people as possible to come along and watch the event for free."
