Wellingborough Olympic Primary School police visit: PCSO Rob Stevens, releases Maryam, three. 30/01/12

Youngsters at Olympic Way pre-school were given a lesson in safety when they were visited by police officers this week.

PCSO Rob Stevens and PC Liza Fuller held an interactive and educational session for children at the pre-school, in Olympic Way, Wellingborough, on Monday.

The officers showed youngsters around a police car and let them look at police equipment.

They also answered any questions the children had.

PCSO Stevens said: “We talked to the children about basic safety – crossing the road and stranger danger.”

Officers from the Wellingborough Police Safer Community Team all visit schools across the borough regularly.

PCSO Stevens added: “All of the officers have got nominated schools which they will visit throughout the school year.

“Over the years we have found the visits to be a really good tool because the children get to know us, so when we are out on our patrols they don’t feel scared to approach us and report any issues.

“They also remember us as they get older, and once they are at secondary schools.”

As part of his work with the school, last December PCSO Stevens gave children at Olympic Infants and Junior School a talk about road safety in the dark.

He also gave out high-visibility ‘slap wraps’, sponsored by Wellingborough Homes, which are reflective bands the children can wear on their arms or wrists to increase their visibility in the dark.

PCSO Stevens said: “I hope talking with the children at Olympic Way will make them stop and think before putting themselves in danger.”
