Police to tackle nuisance bikers in Wellingborough

Motorcycle nuisance on a town estate is being targeted by police officers who have pledged to reduce incidents over the summer months.

The Hemmingwell estate Safer Community Team (SCT), in Wellingborough, has set its new priorities for the next three months, which will tackle criminal damage and motorcycle nuisance across the whole of the Hemmingwell Estate and littering and fly-tipping in the fields at the back of Fulmar Lane and Gannet Lane.

The priorities were set following a consultation with residents about their main concerns in the area.

Motorcycle nuisance across the whole safer community team area was a previous priority but it continues to be an area of concern for people on the estate.

Sergeant Dave Harley, who leads the team, said: "We have carried out targeted patrols at the bottom of Fulmar Lane, where most reported incidents have occurred.

"We are working with our partners to explore the viability of placing some access gates to the rough ground at the bottom of Fulmar Lane to restrict access to the area.

"We have also distributed leaflets across the estate to raise awareness of the legalities of the use of off-road bikes and mini motorcycles."

Previously, the team has tackled the problems of motorcycle nuisance, anti-social behaviour in Nest Farm Crescent and in Teal Lane by increasing the number of patrols in the area and trying to raise awareness in the area of the knock-on effects from people causing trouble.

One Fulmar Lane resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I think the problem is worse in the summer with bikes because people want to be outside.

"It is not just that they are going fast and acting dangerously, it is also the noise, which is really annoying when you have small kids and it is waking them up."

Police officers from the team will also be meeting members of the public to give updates on the priorities at Tesco in Victoria Park, Wellingborough, from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, July 11.

To report any problems, email SCTHemmingwell @northants.police.uk or phone 03000 111222.
