Police see big drop in crime levels
Latest figures show a dramatic drop in the number of crimes committed in Higham Ferrers.
Figures from April 2009 to December 2009 show crime dropped in every area except criminal damage, compared with the same period the previous year.
House burglaries were down by 57 per cent, dropping from 23 to 10 incidents, and other types of burglary were down 47 per cent, from 47 to 28 incidents.
The number of thefts from vehicles fell by 56 per cent and the number of vehicles stolen fell by 17 per cent.
Violent offences were also down by two per cent.
The only crime which increased is criminal damage, with the number of criminal damage incidents reported rising by one per cent from 107 to
108.
A police spokesman said: "The reductions in crime in the Higham Ferrers area show our commitment to making this community safer.
"Thanks to our continued efforts in working closely with local residents and our partners, burglary dwelling is down by 57 per cent, other burglary is down by 40 per cent, and similarly vehicle offences and violence offences are also down.
"As part of our ongoing work with Operation Guardian, we want to continue seeing crime come down.
"We are working with local residents to achieve priorities they want us to look at. We are also conducting regular patrols and leafleting to provide people with advice on crime prevention."
Residents in the town were delighted to hear the progress police are making.
Jem Brittin, 46, of Higham Ferrers, said: "I think it is great news.
"They should be congratulated. Whatever they are doing it is working and long may it continue.
"We have had a few issues, but in the past year I have really noticed a difference and I think it is down there being more of a police presence."
