Plans for 700 homes criticised by residents

Residents have hit out at controversial plans for 700 new homes on the site of a former mine.

People in Irthlingborough say the homes would cripple the town by causing traffic chaos and put too much pressure on local schools and public services.

Hallam Land Management and BS Pension Fund Trustee Ltd has applied to East Northamptonshire Council for outline planning permission for the project on land between Wellingborough and Finedon Road.

On Saturday, protesters took over Irthlingborough High Street to campaign against the plans.

Resident Jon Gray said: "Our concern is that the town would simply not be able to cope with this number of new homes.

"The schools would not be able to cope, the doctors and dentist surgeries would not be able to cope, neither would the roads.

"If the homes are built it would be the beginning of Irthlingborough merging with Finedon."

Former surveyor and mine worker Alan Pack, who lives in Irthlingborough, said he had concerns over the plans to build over the site of the former mine, which he believes is flooded.

Meeting Lane resident Darren Merritt, 36, said: "I'm a bit concerned at the number of houses planned and at the fact it would be on an old mine, I'm worried there would be safety issues.

Jan Armstrong, 47, who works at Cafe@25 in Irthlingborough High Street, said: "I would welcome the extra business but as a resident don't want 700 homes."

There is a public meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday, July 28, at the Band Club in Victoria Street where people will be able to find out more about the plans.

A decision is due at the end of August.
