Petition started to get fire-proof bins for Wellingborough
A petition to switch to fire-proof wheelie bins in areas particularly affected by arson is being launched today.
The Evening Telegraph recently revealed Wellingboorugh had the highest number of wheelie bin fires of any county town in the first two months of this year.
In January and February there were 35 bin arsons, of which 10 took place in Wellingborough.
Wheelie bin fires have been an issue in the town since the death of three-year-old Callum Bland, who died at his Hemmingwell home in 2007 after flames spread to his house from a fire started deliberately in a bin outside.
Petition leader Jayne Buckland, who is the prospective Labour parliamentary candidate for Wellingborough and Rushden, said she felt replacing the existing plastic wheelie bins with fire-resistant models was the best way of preventing further tragedies.
She said: "We are already getting people interested in signing up because it is just such an important issue.
"When poor little Callum died it was a wheelie bin that was up against their house that started it, and most of the wheelie bins on the Hemmingwell estate are next to the houses because there is no room to put them, so there are areas where they should be replaced. The fumes and heat caused when they get set on fire is terrible."
