One thousand days until Olympic games begin

There are only 1,000 days until the 2012 Olympics starts in spectacular style.

Already plans are being put in place to ensure the county's venues and athletes will be hitting the gold standard in time for the opening ceremony on July 27, 2012.

Corby East Midlands International Swimming Pool, Rockingham Triangle Stadium, Rushden & Diamonds Sports Complex and Kettering Conference Centre have all been listed in the Olympic Training Guide handbook, where international squads can train in the run-up to the games.

And Kettering Conference Centre's bid to attract an international squad will start next weekend as it becomes the new home for Volleyball England.

The 700,000 scheme to create a national training camp at the centre for men's, women's, junior and sitting teams, will be marked with an opening ceremony and show matches between the British national teams.

In addition to this, Kettering Council has vowed to support and encourage future Olympians, including this year's Kettering Sports Personality of the Year, Dermot Bailey, and trampolinists Amanda Harris and Katie Mackenzie.

And the council is to launch a scheme with Parkwood Leisure to enable the borough's most talented athletes in a range of sports to use its facilities free of charge until the Olympics.

Corby Council has also put plans in place for the next three years to encourage Olympic hopefuls such as gymnast Daniel Keatings, and to promote its sports venues.

Next weekend the Midlands Swimming Winter Championships will be taking place at Corby East Midlands International pool with 500 swimmers from around the country taking part.

The Cultural Olympiad, celebrating the country's culture in the run up to the games, will also be celebrated at Corby Cube Theatre when it opens next year.

The celebrations will feature festivals, arts performances, films, music performances and workshops right up until the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

In East Northamptonshire the council has made plans to put on Olympic-themed activities in the run-up to the games and after them to encourage people of all ages to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
