One hundred people sign up in memory of baby

More than 100 people have signed up to take part in a buggy walk being held in memory of a baby who died from a rare condition.

Rebecca Jeffery, of Higham Ferrers, has organised the event at Stanwick Lakes in memory of her son Freddie Patenall, who died a year ago.

Freddie was born with a rare condition called ichthyosis which led to his tragic death at just 12-weeks-old.

Ichthyosis stops teeth and hair growing and requires rigorous scrubbing to remove excessive skin growth and prevent infections which can cause death.

Freddie, who was also born without one of his kidneys, had to have creams applied to his skin every three hours and by the time of his death he had lost his sight.

The sponsored buggy walk will take place at Stanwick Lakes at 2pm on June 19 to mark what would have been Freddie's first birthday.

Miss Jeffery, 30, said she was delighted by the number of people who had signed up to take part.

She said: "It's just overwhelming.

"We can't believe the support we've had from the community.

"We've had a mix of people signing up to take part, including people we know and people we don't know who have contacted me through Facebook to ask if they can join us.

"We've also got members of the Ichthyosis Support Group coming from across the country to take part."

Miss Jeffery will also have the support of her two-year-old daughter Bella, who is joining her for the walk.

The event will be in aid of the Ichthyosis Support Group, and a total of 3,000 has already been collected.

The group provides support to families with babies born with the rare condition and money for research.
