No objections to waste dump

Planners have not found any reason to object to a radioactive waste site being located eight miles from a town.

Corby Council officers have told councillors there is no basis on planning grounds to oppose Augean Plc's proposed disposal of low-level radioactive waste at the East Northants Resource Management Facility, near King's Cliffe.

But the authority is still set to tell Northamptonshire County Council it is against the plan following leader Cllr Pat Fawcett's comments that she does not want Corby to become "the highway to the dump".

A discussion on the issue will take place at the Corby Council development control committee meeting on Tuesday.

Head of planning Christopher Nunn said there would be no significant impact on Corby borough.

He said: "The radiation exposures to all persons, workers and members of the public, from these proposals will be below a small fraction of the legal limits and will be much less than the average exposure of a person to naturally occurring radiation.

"The site is an existing waste management facility. There is no proposed increase in the intensity of operation, just a change to the type of material being disposed. "

But he said the council had already raised concerns and is recommending that councillors object in their response to the county council's planning department.

Stuart Robertson, 37, of Beech Close, Corby, said: "If they can prove it's not harmful then you have got no argument.

"But if it is harmful then we don't want it there. With what happened at the steelworks with toxic waste and the ongoing court case, I think this will add to concerns."

The plan is strongly opposed by residents of King's Cliffe, who have set up a campaign group and petition.

Augean's technical director Gene Wilson argues the site will not be a threat to those living nearby as the amount of radioactive waste is small and there will be thorough safety precautions.
