New vicar tucks in at Pork Pie church
Wellingborough United Reformed Church new vicar: Reverand Martha McInness. 14/02/12
A new vicar has taken the helm at one of Wellingborough’s biggest churches.
Rev Martha McInnes took up the post at the United Reformed Church in High Street, Wellingborough – known locally as the Pork Pie church – in November. It follows the departure of the Rev Paul Bedford, who left the church in January last year.
Ms McInnes is originally from the USA. She first moved to the United Kingdom in 1993 and lived on the Wirral and in Sutton Coldfield, taking up roles at churches in both areas, before moving back to the USA in 2005. She moved back to the UK in summer last year. Her most recent post before taking up her role in Wellingborough was running a shelter for homeless families in Florida.
Ms McInnes said she had come to Wellingborough in July last year, met with the leadership of the church and gave worship. The way the United Reformed Church works in selecting ministers is that all parties, including the congregation, are invited to give their views on whether the potential new minister is the right match for them.
Ms McInnes said she now wanted to get to know everyone. She said: “My philosophy is the first year you spend time to get to know the community and people, so that’s what I’m doing. Although I have been a minister for over 20 years I need to get to know the people in the community here.
“I have already done quite a few funerals and next month we start doing weddings. It’s an opportunity to meet people in the wider community, which is always a joy because you meet such a wide range of people.”

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 03:37 PMSo Wellingborough will now have its very own "Vicar of Dibley"! I'm sorry to say that I don't agree with women as vicars or in any other similar positions within any religions. Women have a place in our community but not at the front line within a church.
