New pub landlords back fund for Zak
Landlady and landlord Liz and John McCusker are determined to turn the pub they've taken over into the hub of the community.
And they've picked a special cause for their first big fundraising event at the Open Hearth, in Studfall Avenue. The couple are holding a live music night in aid of six-year-old Zak Henderson, who was left with quadriplegic cerebral palsy after contracting pneumococcal meningitis when he was 18 months old.
Zak's mum Vicky is raising money to buy the youngster a wheelchair trike and the music night at the pub will give the fund a huge boost.
Mrs McCusker, 56, and her 64-year-old husband have been in the pub trade for years and used to run The Pluto, in Gainsborough Road, which has since been pulled down.
The couple, who grew up in Corby and have five children and five grandchildren, took over the pub a few weeks ago and are planning to give it a fresh new look.
Mrs McCusker said: "We want to turn the Open Hearth into a focal point for the community. We plan to make it a music venue and we're very happy to help raise money for Zak. We are also thinking about holding car boot sales in the pub car park and the large lounge is available
for functions free of charge."
The music night for Zak is on Saturday, August 7, from 7.30pm until late, and will feature Lincolnshire band 101 Proof. Tickets are 4, available from the pub, and there will also be a disco and a raffle on the night.
Mrs Henderson, of Staffa Walk, Corby, said: "The trike will make a big difference to Zak. It folds up and we'll be able to get it in the car and take him places. He's been at Beanfield School in Corby for three years now and he's making improvements."
