New store for old Tesco in Wellingborough will create 30 jobs
A bargain store has revealed it is to move into a prominent shopping centre site which has been empty for several years, creating 30 jobs.
Home Bargains will be setting up shop in the former Tesco shop in the Swansgate shopping centre, Wellingborough.
The news comes after the Evening Telegraph reported in October that the discount store, which has outlets in Kettering, Corby and Northampton, was set to open a branch in Wellingborough.
Joe Morris, operations manager at TJ Morris, the Merseyside-based firm which owns Home Bargains, said: "The store is about 11,000 sq ft and we will probably spend about 500,000 fitting it out.
"About 30 jobs will be created."
Home Bargains sells health and beauty goods, household products, snacks, drinks, alcohol and packaged and tinned foods at discount prices.
Mr Morris said: "We see Wellingborough as having great potential for us. It's a good market town and we do well in market towns. We have plenty of stores in the area.
"Wellingborough is an area we have looked at for quite a while so we are pleased this store has come up."
He said he thought the people of Wellingborough would appreciate the discounts the store will offer to help cope with the credit crunch. The store will open on May 8.
Swansgate centre manager Lindsay Tickner said: "We are pleased to be welcoming another addition to our range of stores. I am sure customers will find Home Bargains has plenty to offer."
