New church open for the first time

A new Christian church has opened its doors in Corby.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has set up in the Church of the Epiphany in Elizabeth Street and welcomed a congregation of about 200 people for its first service.

It has members from across the town's diverse community and from countries including Zimbabwe, Malawi, the Philippines and New Zealand, as well as many from England.

Followers believe the world should be preparing for the imminent second coming of Christ, and have their Sabbath from Friday evening to sunset on Saturday.

The church's roots lie in America, in the religious revival of the mid-19th century.

A commissioning service for the church was held on June 20.

During the service the leaders of the church, Pastor Peter Jeynes and Joshua Hammersley, along with a team of active members, explained who and what the Seventh-day Adventist Church is all about.

Corby deputy mayor Ann Brown was invited along.

Mr Jeynes said: "The church is interested in the community and helping the people among whom they live."

The president of the church in the north of England, Pastor Ian Sweeney, a former Times Preacher of the Year winner, was the day's main speaker.

He said: "We were warmly welcomed to the area by the deputy mayor – who likewise was warmly welcomed by the multi-national church."

The deputy mayor promised to return as a visitor after a 30-year absence from church.

Seventh-day Adventists have never had a church in Corby. Their nearest is in Canon Street, Kettering.

The church, organised formally in 1863, bases its faith and practice on the bible and has a list of 28 beliefs. It has grown hugely in recent years in the Third World and is steadily increasing its membership in the West.

It joins other faiths and Christian denominations in Corby including Serbian Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox, Church of Scotland and Spiritualist.
