Neighbours help warn fire family

Neighbours banged on the door of a family home to tell the shocked occupants their car was on fire as the flames spread to the property.

Neighbours rang 999 after knocking on the door of the home in Unity Close, Wollaston, to alert residents Kerry Laughton, 32, and Mark Brealey, 34, to the blaze at around 9.10pm on Friday night.

It is not known how the blue Renault Megane, which belongs to Mr Brealey and was parked in the driveway, caught fire.

Miss Laughton and Mr Brealey's three-year-old son Evan was asleep in his bedroom, just above the garage and porch area where the fire happened.

Miss Laughton said: "We were just sitting watching telly and there was a bang on the door, it was a neighbour who had noticed the car was alight.

"The fire brigade came out and by the time they got there it had started onto the house and the garage."

Mr Brealey went outside while Miss Laughton stayed in the house and moved Evan into a back room away from the blaze.

But when firefighters arrived they shouted into the house for them to get out, so she woke the boy and took him outside.

Miss Laughton said: "It all seemed to happen in slow motion really. Everybody was fine, nobody was hurt.

"I'm just a bit shocked really, we can't understand how it happened, but we are fine – Evan doesn't seem to know too much about it, he thinks it was a bad dream."

Neighbour Mark Bayes, 24, said residents on the other side of the road had come out with a fire extinguisher to try and help control the blaze as the family waited for firefighters to arrive.

He said: "I imagine the people in the house were quite shocked."

A fire service spokesman said the car had been severely damaged by the fire and the blaze had spread to the porch area and adjoining garage.

The spokesman said: "The roof of the porch had 50 per cent severe damage by fire and there was moderate fire damage to the garage. Two people recovered from the property didn't sustain any injuries."
