Mum with one in a million form of cancer launches bid to help others

A mum-of-two who was given three months to live after surgeons discovered she had cancer has set up a website to try to help fellow sufferers and is now trying to achieve charitable status.

Dawn Green was told she had only months to live in February 2008.

However, after turning to the internet and finding an online blog from an American sufferer who had similar symptoms she went back to hospital for another opinion and was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Pseudomyxoma Peritonei which effects about one in a million people.

Miss Green, 33, of Broughton, said: "It was such a shock when I was initially told I had cancer, I sorted out paying for my funeral and made a will. I was worried about what was going to happen."

After being correctly diagnosed Miss Green received treatment in Basingstoke for the cancer in her appendix in June 2008.

She said: "I had an operation to remove part of my spleen, appendix, part of my bowel and gall bladder which left me with no belly button."

"I was told the cancer had gone but could return in 10 to 15 years – but it came back in six months."

In June last year, Miss Green went for a further operation and had more of the cancer removed.

Miss Green, who has two teenage children, said: "I have been quite frank with them about it, this is the new normal.

"It's given me the chance to put things right in my life and make the most of it.

"On paper, when you look at the operations I've had I'd have said there's no way I'd survive, I thought I was going to die.

"I've gone through it twice now and I'm still here."

Miss Green set up www.pseudomyxomasurvivor.co.uk to highlight her condition.

To take the project on and achieve charitable status she needs to raise 5,000.

She has organised a fancy dress party which will take place on Friday, December 10, at the Praise Community Church Hall in Alexandra Street, Kettering.

Doors open at 7pm and tickets cost 4.
