Mum's terror as baby daughter almost strangled on duvet

A mother has described the awful moments when her one-year-old daughter was almost strangled by her own duvet.

Layla Williams feared the worst when loose threads from the High Street branded duvet became wrapped twice around her little daughter Ella's neck.

Mrs Williams, 22, said: "I had laid my daughter down to play on her duvet while I put some washing on, before putting her to bed.

"After hearing a strange, loud bang, I went to see what was going on, only to find that she had fallen to the ground.

"All the threads had come loose on her duvet and they were round her neck."

Mrs Williams said she could not understand how the threads had come loose.

She said: "The duvet was quite new and was from a top brand – and not cheap.

"I don't think I even had time to think, it was a complete blank moment, and all I could think about was getting her free.

"She was trying to pull herself free, but it was just making it tighter.

"She was unable to breathe and she was very red.

"I eventually managed to cut the threads from the duvet and unwind them from her neck.

"I then had to shock her into the next the breath."

Ella was then taken to hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.

Mrs Williams and her husband Jason, of Fulmar Lane, Wellingborough, said the freak nature of the incident made it all the more horrifying to comprehend.

Mrs Williams said: "I don't want to think about what could have happened it we had put her to bed with that duvet."

Following the incident the family faced questions from doctors and staff at Kettering Hospital. Staff were eventually satisfied that thread from the duvet had caused the injuries.

Mrs Williams said: "Ella has made a full recovery.

"I never thought something like this could happen and I want to make people aware of this.

"I would hate to find out that someone else was not as lucky as us."

Mrs Williams said she now has no option but to sew up all her daughter's duvet covers, in order to prevent any risk to her child.

The family has sent the duvet back to its manufacturer for tests to be conducted.
