Mum is taking on Chinese challenge

A determined mum is preparing for a cycle ride along the Great Wall of China with TV presenter Fern Britton.

Victoria Ashford, 41, decided to take on the 450km bike ride in aid of charity Women for Women, who work to improve the lives and health of women and babies around the world.

The trip will see dozens of women, including the former This Morning presenter, tackle steep climbs and rides of 100km a day.

Mrs Ashford, a mum-of-four, said: "I got involved because my friend was doing it and asked me to go with her, but now she has dropped out so I am doing it on my own.

"I am making sure she is going to sponsor me though.

"I have a training programme to follow until we set off so I am ready."

As part of the training she is cycling every day with a trailer on the back for her youngest child to sit in, describing it as "looking a bit mad."

She added: "I am really looking forward to it but am a little bit nervous.

"I'm a bit nervous about flying anyway, so I think the flight out there will be the worst bit because I will be worried about the cycling too."

Mrs Ashford, of Wroe Close, Corby, must raise 3,300 before she can go on the trip in October and is currently about halfway to the target.

This will be Fern Britton's fifth ride for the charity, founded by Professor Robert Winston to tackle genetic diseases in women, as well as female cancers, miscarriages and premature births.

Mrs Ashford said: "I've got four children of my own who are all healthy, but if there was anything wrong I would be glad there were charities like this one out there."
