Memorial for 7/7 bombing victim

A London bombing victim will be honoured at a reunion of his former schoolmates.

Jonathan Downey, who went to Our Lady and Pope John RC School in Gainsborough Road, Corby, died during the 7/7 terrorist bombings on the London transport system on July 7, 2005.

Now, five years on, his memory will be honoured by pupils who went to the secondary school at a reunion organised by a friend.

Kevin Costello, a bank worker and dance teacher who is helping to organise the event, said: "All the money we raise will go to Amnesty International in my friend Jon's memory.

"He was well known in the town but sadly died in the bombings.

"We're holding it on July 9 so it is a particularly poignant time as it is around the fifth anniversary."

Mr Downey, known as Jon, was a former Corby Council worker who grew up in the town and left to live in Milton Keynes with wife Veronica just

18 months before he died aged 34.

He had taken a job in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's human resources department and was on his way to work on the westbound Circle line when the bomb went off.

At the time his family described him as a "kind, caring and compassionate son", who had a "happy and fulfilled childhood".

An inquest into his death and the other 51 victims, is due to open in October after being delayed by legal arguments.

Our Lady and Pope John shut in 2005 and since then the building has been used for the neighbouring Kingswood School. Next month's reunion is open to pupils who left in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Mr Costello added: "This is going to be the last chance to see the school because it will be demolished quite soon when the new Kingswood School opens.

"There will be tours of the school on the night and a chance to relive some old memories."

Tickets priced 5 are available at both Gallagher's and Frank's Barbers shops.
