A psychotic maniac who dragged a 12-year-old schoolgirl into a field and raped her has been locked up in a mental hospital and will not be released for at least nine years.

Brian Hutcheon, 27, of Highfield Road, Kettering, was sentenced to nine years and four months at Northampton Crown Court yesterday for the attack in Geddington last June.

Judge Michael Fowler, sentencing, said: “I’m satisfied by all that I have heard, by your history and the circumstances of the offence and by what I have read about you that you represent a substantial risk to the public of committing further offences.”

Hutcheon, who was flanked in the dock by three mental health nurses, has been taken back to the secure mental hospital in Leicestershire where he has been kept for months as psychiatrists tried to decided if he was fit to plead.

If doctors rule he is suitable for release before his sentence is up he will be sent to prison for the remaining time.

And doctors can jail Hutcheon, who has personality disorders as well as mental health disorders, including psychosis, if he fails to co-operate with the treatment.

Hutcheon has been jailed for public protection and will only be released if he is judged safe. He will first be eligible for parole after four years and eight months.

Hutcheon admitted forcing the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to perform a sex act on him.

The court also heard he had offered the girl beer to drink and a cigarette.

Agonisingly just moments before the attack the victim had walked past some of her friends while Hutcheon was stalking her.

As well as a string of previous convictions for violence and dishonesty, Hutcheon had previously been caught trying to push a 14-year-old girl into a park while performing a sex act on himself.

But Wellingborough magistrates only fined him £100 for the attack.

Judge Fowler said: “That was dealt with by magistrates in a way that didn’t recognise its true danger.”

the last part of this story is bewildering. Why did he only get a £100 fine for his previous offence - unbelievable.
