Looks like rain, dear, as Santa comes to town

Corby residents flocked to their town centre for some last-minute shopping and festive fun, despite the bad weather.

Hundreds of people braved the rain to buy their last presents, see Santa and his reindeer and try a bit of ice skating.

Bernadette Francis, 30, of Oakley Vale, Corby, was out shopping in the town centre with her partner and two children.

She said: "We came to see Santa and his reindeer.

"We only moved up to Corby two years ago but we think this is definitely the place to be this Christmas.

"It is lovely. There are lots of new shops and I think it is great that you have Santa walking around the town."

Val Downs, 40, of Stanion, came into town with her daughter, Karla.

She said: "We are out shopping because my daughter wanted some clothes and with the new town centre you don't have to go out of town any more.

"We think it is absolutely fantastic in Corby this Christmas. All the shops open, Santa and his reindeer and the whole ice skating experience.

"Corby has certainly improved.

"It would be nice if it was under cover, but we can't really help the weather. "

Despite the rain, the ice skating was a big hit with a queue forming as soon as it opened.

Nyasha Pitt, marketing manager for Corby town centre said: "This is the second year we had opened the ice rink and it is a real draw. The crowds love it.

"We have even had people ringing up to see if it would be opening this year. It is nice for the people coming into town but also for the retailers.

"We can't help the rain but we work very hard with what we have got and the people of Corby appreciate it so it is definitely rewarding. "

Clare Butler, 39, of Corby went ice-skating with her five-year-old daughter, Abbie.

She said: " Abbie wanted to come and see Father Christmas and do some ice-skating. We have been to see the reindeer and it has been lots of fun. They are doing so much more for the children now in Corby. It is a lot better.
