Last day at Woolies and it's bargain basement

Leggings for 20p, bibs for 20p and batteries for £1.50 – these are some of the few remaining goods on sale during Woolworths' last day of trading today.

Staff at the Kettering store were yesterday busy packing up the shop's fixtures and fittings, which have all been sold, while shoppers picked up the last of the bargains.

Much of what is left is being sold at less than half the original price, with offers including four greetings cards for 1, diaries for 1, pick-and-mix for 1.19 and four egg cups for 99p.

Customer Carol Munday, from Corby, was among those who picked up a couple of reduced items.

She said: "I have been using Woolworths for many years and we are upset about it closing.

"It's been with us since our parents' time. We would often come for sweets."

Her husband Ron said: "I remember getting lost in Woolworths once when I was a boy. It used to be a very popular shop."

Another customer, who did not want to be named, said: "I remember as a child everything was six old pennies.

"As soon as you got your pocket money you would go to Woolworths.

"I still have a pewter medallion which I bought as a child. I must have had it about 60 years now.

"Woolworths used to have parallel maroon counters up the shop and because everything was 6d it was like a treasure trove.

"It's sad that it is closing, although saying that I haven't used it for years."

The Evening Telegraph understands that JobCentre advisers will be visiting the store on Thursday to help staff who have lost their jobs.

The Woolworths in Rushden is also closing its doors for the last time today, while the stores in Wellingborough and Corby have already shut.
