Youngsters in Corby are being urged to sign up for a triathlon and enter into the spirit of the Olympic Games.

British Triathlon and Tata Steel are holding the event in May and it promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Last year 950 youngsters aged from eight to 13 took part in the Kids of Steel event which is in its sixth year.

Zara Hyde Peters, the chief executive of British Triathlon, said: “This year’s Tata Kids of Steel series is the biggest yet, giving even more budding triathletes the opportunity to learn about our fast growing, modern and dynamic Olympic sport of triathlon in the year that Britain is hosting the Olympic Games.

“We hope to inspire our young audience to go to Hyde Park and watch our triathletes this summer.”

Tata Kids of Steel will take place on Tuesday, May 22, at Corby East Midlands Swimming Pool and Westcott Way and will be one of 24 similar free events being held across the UK.

The aim is to give children a fun, positive experience of sport and all the equipment is provided, including bikes and helmets. Youngsters need to provide their own swimming and running kit and everyone who takes part will receive a T-shirt, swim cap, gym sack and medal.

Karl-Ulrich Köhler, chief executive of Tata Steel in Europe, said: “The event gives children the chance to have a go at a mini triathlon in a fun, exciting and safe environment.

“It is truly inspirational, with a party in the park atmosphere. Tata Steel also encourages employees to volunteer at the event, supporting the local community and enjoying the day as much as the children.”
