Kettering parks given £200,000 lotto funds

Two parks are set to benefit from a £200,000 lottery grant for family activities and events.

Kettering Council has received the money from the Big Lottery Fund to introduce play rangers at Highfield Road and Charlotte Place parks in the town over the next two years.

The play rangers will be responsible for organising free activities at the parks including mobile skate ramps, the new 'G Force' roundabout, bouncy castles, face-painting, mask-making, plaster bandage modelling and body art.

Some of the money will be used for the Free and Fun event at Highfield Road Park which is being held on Wednesday, October 29 from 1pm to 3pm.

Kettering Council's play champion, cllr Russell Roberts said: "I am very pleased with the way Kettering Council has led the way on this major scheme.

"It represents the most significant development in children's play provision in the borough for many, many years.

"I am absolutely delighted with the way Kettering Play Partnership has used the money from the Big Lottery to draw in even more funding to the borough.

"We hope that lots of people will come along and join in with the celebrations at the parks."

It is the second cash boost for the parks after money was secured from Wren Environmental Ltd, Orbit Housing Association and county councillor funding to make the equipment safer for children and teenagers.

The second project earmarked for cash will be the building of a BMX and cycle track near Charlotte Place in Kettering, which will be ready to use at Easter next year, offering free cycling courses for youngsters.

The money was secured after a public consultation to find out what young people and their parents would like to see in the town's play parks.

The two play rangers will be liaising with members of the public to organise community events and will start regular sessions around the town from November 3.

Anyone who would like more information can call the Kettering Play Rangers on 01536 521291. Details can also be obtained by emailing playrangers@northampton.ymca.org.uk.
