Kettering Ise Lodge fundraiser nets more than £1,500
A man who has been growing his hair for more than a year finally shaved it off at a charity fun day.
Steve McDaid has organised an annual football match and disco for the last seven years at the Ise Lodge Community Centre to support local charities.
What started as a bet saw Mr McDaid grow shoulder length hair and dye it pink, purple, red and blond.
Following a football match between the community centre's bar and the lounge regulars, Mr McDaid finally shaved off his black and blond hair.
It is thought the whole day's activities raised more than 1,500 for the kidney dialysis unit at Kettering General Hospital.
Mr McDaid said: "I was very glad to see the hair go.
"The last time I had long hair was 1997.
"It started as a bit of a joke with my girlfriend because she kept saying that I needed to cut my hair."
Hairdresser Tanya Walsh from Hairaisers in Kettering finally took a pair of scissors to Mr McDaid's hair after he collected 900 in sponsor money.
The annual fun day raises between 1,200 and 2,200 each year.
Mr McDaid, of St Christopher's Close, said: "It started as a spur of the moment thing in the club and it just became an annual thing.
"I had a lot of people ringing me up wanting to play in the match.
"It gets quite competitive and the teams do take it seriously.
"Last year we had torrential rain but we still had about 50 or 60 people turn up to watch."
The charities the fundraisers have supported over the years include Cransley Hospice, the Special Care Baby Unit, Marie Curie and the air ambulance.
Mr McDaid thanked Steve Carson, who did a 14-mile sponsored walk from the Ise Lodge to Woodford to raise another 350 for the cause
