Kettering girls scoop honours
Kettering Carnival Court won top prize at another town's carnival.
The judges at Nuneaton Carnival awarded Kettering carnival queen Sophie Blumire, 22, princess Ashleigh Hammond, 15, junior queen Coralie Pearce, 10, and junior princess Chloe McCreadie, nine, the trophy for the Best Visiting Court and Float on June 14.
Shirley Walker, chaperone to the court, said: "Needless to say, they were thrilled to bits."
Nuneaton is considered the heart of carnival country and the Kettering court beat seven courts to the title.
The judges spoke to the girls at the start of the carnival and then watched their performance on the float as they rode around the carnival route.
They were judged on their dresses and their behaviour.
Mrs Walker said: "It was a very hot day and a very long parade.
"It started at 1pm and the carnival at about 4.15pm. It was a mighty big parade."
The girls also met Linda Robson, star of BBC's Birds of a Feather, who was celebrity guest at the event.
Tributes to Marjorie Brown, who served as chaperone to Kettering's Carnival Court for 40 years and died on April 1 this year, will be paid at this year's carnival.
Mrs Brown's husband Jeffery, 85, who served as the carnival's treasurer between 1949 and 1994, said: "Marjorie would be very proud to think people recognised the work she did.
"I will still carry on going. That is what Marjorie would have wanted."
Mrs Walker is looking for a lock-up, lean-to or large garage to store the carnival court's float trailer after the death of the woman who previously stored it.
The space will need to be at least 7ft wide and about 20ft long.
They are also appealing for a car and driver to tow the trailer on the day of the carnival, August 22.
The court will be appearing at Wellingborough Carnival on July 14.
