Kettering General Hospital gets £30m go-ahead

Plans for a new £30m expansion of Kettering General Hospital have been given the go-ahead by the Government.

The hospital received the news this week and is now pressing ahead with the three-storey development (pictured inset) which could be open as soon as 2012.

The new building will provide state-of-the-art wards, a new intensive care unit, and improved children's care.

Kettering General Hospital's Director of Strategy and Partnerships, Mike Smeeton said: "We are very pleased that this very important new development has been approved.

"This means we can now build this 30m expansion to the hospital bringing significant improvements – particularly in terms of expanding our intensive care and improving our facilities for children."

Detailed plans for the new building show that a new paediatric outpatients department with six consulting rooms, and an acute 28-bed medical ward will be included on the ground floor.

A new intensive care unit with 16 beds and two isolation rooms with direct access to hospital theatres will be located on the first floor.

A paediatric unit with 32 beds, surgical and medical wards, an assessment unit and high dependency facilities will be on the second floor. Adolescent patients will have a dedicated area within the unit.

The work will be carried out without causing significant disruption to patients thanks to a new 24-bed treatment pod due to be opened at the hospital this October.

Mr Smeeton said: "Building the new Treatment Centre Pod will enable us to carry out two years of building work without significant disruption to the hospital's capacity.

"The pod will be finished in October and building work on the new 30m development itself will commence soon afterwards."

The news brings to an end a delay in the project stretching back to May when the hospital trust's board gave approval for the plans after it received planning permission in March.

A delay of 16 weeks occurred when the coalition government called in all large public sector projects for review, but approval has now been given.
