Kettering beauty spot is given a clean-up
A new volunteer group has started the clean-up of a popular beauty spot.
Natural-Ise, a volunteer group set up by residents from the Ise Lodge and Grange estates in Kettering and other nature lovers, started cleaning up the River Ise and surrounding green space on Saturday.
Volunteer Jean Carter, 45, from St John's Road, Kettering, said: "If the river is cleaner and the environment is nice it's much better for the people who use it.
"We are really lucky to have this stretch of land. It's a really nice area and we need to make sure we keep it that way."
More than 10 volunteers used litter pickers, bags and gloves provided by the council and a dinghy brought by one volunteer to clear the river, banks and surrounding fields.
The group started at the Deeble Road bridge and worked their way upstream towards Warkton.
Mrs Carter said a lot of rubbish is dumped in the Ise Valley over the summer with children dumping bikes and shopping trolleys there.
The area is popular with dog walkers, joggers and nature lovers.
The group formed after listening to a talk by Dr Robin Frost of the River Nene Region Park at a safer community team meeting a few months ago.
Dr Frost has started a group called Revital-Ise to clean up and survey the entire length of the Nene.
As well as cleaning the river, Natural-Ise plans to conduct biodiversity surveys of the area and conservation work.
Mrs Carter said the group hopes to set up bird and insect boxes and restock the river with trout.
There are already trout in the Ise but Mrs Carter said: "We would always like more. We want to get the river back to how we as the general public would like it to be."
