Jobs boost as plastics firm opens

Corby's jobs market has been given a timely boostafter after a state-of-the-art plastics recycling plant opened its doors in the town.

In the week that another company in the town, Weldon Plant, announced it was going into admisitration, the country's largest plastic recycler, Jayplas J&A Young, launched a 30,000-tonne capacity site in Saxon Way East.

The company, which processes plastic PET bottles, has taken on 50 new employees and a further 70 jobs are set to be created as it relocates its head office to the former Quebecor factory on the Oakley Hay Industrial estate.

Mike Maxwell, head of operations, praised the calibre of the new workforce, employed after applications for positions at the firm ran into the hundreds.

Mr Maxwell said: "We felt it was an area which had potential for a good workforce as it has always had a reputation for being fairly industrial.

"We are very pleased with the location – it's the ideal spot for us as regards to logistics for good motorway links."

The company deals with bottles after they have been collected by local authorities and waste companies before sorting them by colour and polymer-type to create flakes and pellets, for use in making brand new plastic bottles. The site took 10 months to transform after lying empty for two years since Quebecor closed, making 250 people redundant.

Staff are receiving training ahead of the site's official opening.

It plans to be at full capacity by January next year.

Mr Maxwell added: "The Government targets are increasing year on year, there's a need for recycling infrastructure in the UK to grow.

"Recycling PET bottles is not difficult, it has been problematic but the technology has moved on now. We are happy with the plant and pleased with what has been produced."

The company already has five other sites in the UK, mainly in the Midlands, but Corby is its first site to produce pellets to high standards required to contain food products .
