It's nearly time for Rowell fun

Excitement is building as preparations get underway for the 805th Rowell Fair.

The annual event in Rothwell takes place next month, beginning with the famous charter proclamation on horseback at 6am on Monday, June 8.

This year's fair promises to be as fun-filled as last year with a host of rides, exhibitions and entertainment for people in the town.

Bailiff Robert Denton has been reading the charter for more than 18 years.

Mr Denton, of Spencer Street, Rothwell, said: "We usually have up to 2,000 people come out on the morning of the proclamation and we're hoping for a similar turn- out this year.

"It's a great event and well supported by people from across Rothwell. All the fair rides will be arriving soon and then moving into the Market Place."

The royal charter was granted by King John on January 26, 1204. The proclamation will begin outside Holy Trinity Church in Squires Hill and continue around the town to the Charter Inn.

Mr Denton said: "This is one of the oldest events of its type in the country and always a good morning."

The larger rides will move into place on Thursday, June 4, ahead of the fair which opens on Saturday, June 6 at 2pm.

The Methodist church will be open from 6pm to 9pm for refreshments.

The following day there will be a classic car parade from the town's football club at 11am which, led by a marching jazz band, will travel via Cecil Street, Rushton Road, the town centre and High Street, to the Rowell Charter Inn.

There will also be an annual model exhibition from 11am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm in Tresham Hall. The jazz band will perform at the Rowell Charter Inn until it leads the civic parade from Holy Trinity Parish Church to the fairground for the traditional 3pm blessing of the fair.

Music for this will be provided by Gretton Silver Band.
