Illegal immigrants caught in cat food

UK Border Agency officers have foiled an attempt by twelve illegal immigrants to smuggle themselves into the UK – hidden in a lorry load of cat food.

The Dutch-registered lorry was stopped in Calais at 3am on 24 November, before it could board a ferry to the UK.

A search by UK Border Agency officers revealed that twelve men – ten Afghans and two Palestinians – were hiding in the load of tinned cat food, which was due to be transported to Desborough.

A UK Border Agency spokesman said: "We have hundreds of British immigration officers based at ports in France and Belgium, working to stop illegal immigrants before they get to the UK.

"UK Border Agency uses heart beat detectors, carbon dioxide machines, sniffer dogs and visual searches to find well-hidden illegal immigrants.

"Last year over one million lorries were searched and we prevented 18,000 attempts to cross the English Channel without permission."

The illegal immigrants were handed over to the French authorities.
