How getting active changed Claire's life
Claire Ashby has been named as the county's first ever Get Active winner.
To mark the effort of those taking part in the Get Active programme Northamptonshire Sports teamed up with the Evening Telegraph at the county's Sports Awards at Kettering Conference Centre last week.
The 41-year old from Northampton was left in tears when she was announced as the first ever Get Active winner.
She said: "I just don't believe that I have won, it is such an honour.
"I have had such a hard life and getting involved in this project has just changed my life.
"Getting active has been brilliant."
Claire got involved in the programme to win the region 1m and improve her health by joining a six-week introductory programme called Activ8.
Once the six-week course was over she decided to join a gym.
Since then Claire has taken part in a number of charity walks and has signed up to a cycling scheme.
Northamptonshire Sports is trying to encourage more people like Claire to come forward and take part in the scheme as 20,000 people need to sign up to it to be eligible for the prize money.
A spokesman said: "We thought it was important to celebrate the effort of people getting involved in the scheme as it affects the future of sport in the county.
"If we could win the money it could go towards sporting facilities that could be used for budding Olympic athletes and people wanting to improve their general fitness."
