How you are helping to fight war on drugs

Tip-offs from the public have helped police seize thousands of pounds worth of drugs in the county.

The latest figures show an estimated 226,000 worth of drugs have been seized by Northamptonshire Police during the past 10 months as a result of residents' calls to Crimestoppers.

The independent charity received more than 250 calls during that time about drug offences, including 33 calls about the manufacture and

cultivation of drugs.

These calls from members of the public provided the police with intelligence which led to the detection of cannabis factories and three arrests in January. The offenders have been placed on police bail until March 2010.

The force's operational performance unit officer, Charlotte Green, said: "We work closely with Crimestoppers to bring to justice those involved in criminal activity. It's vital the public continues to report anyone who they think might be committing crime in their area."

One of the latest tip-offs led to the discovery of 400 cannabis plants in a three-bedroom semi-detached house in Wharfedale Road, Corby, on Sunday.

Residents in the quiet street said they had been suspicious because the property's blinds were always down, its windows were always open and no-one lived there.

A police spokesman said: "We won't tolerate drug offences and where intelligence suggests such activities are taking place we will seek to gain evidence to support criminal charges.

"By working together we can make a difference."

People who feel unable to speak directly to the police can provide information anonymously to Crimestoppers by telephoning 0800 555 111.

Crimestoppers will pass that information on to the police.
