Historic building may become civic centre
A historic building in Daventry could become a civic centre once again after members of a local authority expressed an interest in making it their headquarters.
Daventry Town Council is to hold a meeting about moving into the 240-year-old Moot Hall, which has been put up for rent by landlord Daventry District Council.
The landmark building in Market Square has been used as a court house, town hall and museum in its history, and was converted into an upmarket Indian restaurant in 2006.
When the restaurant closed at the beginning of this year, some town councillors spotted an opportunity to restore the building to its original civic purpose.
Councillor Peter Harper, who also runs a number of shops in Daventry town centre, said: "The Moot Hall is a landmark building and it should be serving the people.
"In my view the building isn't suited to commercial uses, but should be used for public service. I think the town council could move in, have meeting rooms on the ground floor, offices upstairs, and put the museum in the cottages to the rear."
The town council's original home was the Moot Hall when it was established in 2003, but it moved to its current base at Bishop Crewe House in North Street shortly afterwards where it also has a museum.
A possible return to the Moot Hall will be discussed at a town council meeting on Monday, February 18.
Councillor Glenda Simmonds said: "Personally, I think it should be the town council that moves in. It's such an important building."
