High rate of burglary in Wellingborough during festive season

Three Wellingborough wards experienced a high rate of burglary during the Christmas and New Year period.

Shortly after Christmas, five burglaries a day were being reported in Wellingborough, the main affected areas being Croyland, Redwell and Castle.

The figure is now down to two a day on average and, on a pleasing note, the number of burglaries resulting from premises being left insecure has fallen.

Inspector Pete Chisholm, the Wellingborough sector commander, said: "The number of walk-in burglaries through insecure rear doors has dropped. Members of the public appear to be heeding the advice that their doors and windows should be locked and secured at all times.

"The preferred method of entry at the moment is by forcing UPVC kitchen windows, so I would urge householders to take extra precautions such as fixing window locks.

"We have had some significant successes recently in getting some key offenders remanded for trial for dwelling burglary.

"But there are still people out there committing these crimes. Anyone who sees any suspicious activity, or who has information for us, should contact the police immediately or, if they wish to remain anonymous, they should ring Crimestoppers.

"Rest assured we will be looking for forensic opportunities and using SmartWater to get those responsible."

Wellingborough police can be contacted on 08453 700700 – alternatively, information can be given by ringing Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
