Help my Vicki have great day
A dad is appealing for help to give his 15-year-old daughter, who is battling leukaemia, a Christmas to remember.
Vicki Alex has been able to enjoy the last few days at home during a break from her treatment in Leicester, but it is likely she will have to spend Christmas in hospital.
The trip home comes after eight weeks of rigorous treatment for Vicki, who was rushed into hospital after being taken ill at school in September, and it was discovered she had cancer. The teenager from Irthlingborough Road, Finedon, was finally allowed home on Wednesday after responding well to her second round of chemotherapy at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
But Vicki, who has acute myeloid leukaemia, will be returning to hospital tomorrow and it is likely she will have to spend Christmas on the ward.
Vicki's dad Nick is determined to give his daughter the best Christmas he can – although with the expense of travelling to Leicester every-other day the father-of-two is looking for help to give Vicki a day to remember.
Nick said: "Every donation will directly help Vicki. The purpose of this is two-fold. It will raise money to pay for petrol and car parking, as the cost of this is starting to bite.
"It's also to ensure Vicki has an amazing Christmas.
"With Christmas coming, it's important to highlight the strains of Vicki's illness go way beyond how it affects her directly.
"It would be much easier, of course, if Vicki was being treated locally, but NHS provision in Northamptonshire is sadly lacking."
Nick added: "What we have said to her is if she is in hospital over Christmas, we will also have a family Christmas when she comes home, we will move Christmas to a later date."
If Vicki is in hospital over Christmas, plans are being made to get friends and family over to see her and to decorate her room or ward with a tree and festive decorations.
He said: "All we can really do is make it special, buy her special presents and try and do things like bring a tree to her."
Vicki has already had one generous donation from Richard Burton, who gave Vicki 500 after reading her story in the Evening Telegraph.
