Gyms braced for Olympics effect
Hundreds more people are expected to get active at their local leisure centres in the coming weeks due to the Olympic Games.
Centre managers across the north of the county said they were anticipating a growth in interest in activities such as swimming, tennis, table tennis and badminton.
The number of people going swimming is one particular area expected to grow following the Great Britain team picking up a gold and a bronze medal on Monday.
Manager at Splash Leisure Pool in Rushden Nicki Manghan said: "It is obviously inspiring people to come to the pool, and that is what we were expecting.
"I think and I hope that the medals will encourage people to go swimming and get active."
Jamie Woods, manager of Waendel and Redwell Leisure Centres, in Wellingborough, said: "I would hope that we will see more interest in some areas, especially if we do well in certain sports."
Centre manager of Desborough Leisure Centre Katie Cottrell said: "I definitely think it will have a positive effect.
"I know when we have Wimbledon our tennis courts get completely booked up. It definitely seems to have an effect on people, whatever sport they are watching on television."
When the Olympics comes to this country in 2012 the boost to sports and fitness activities is expected to be even bigger.
Corby is just one site in the county which could be used as a training centre with its new 50m pool and training centre costing 18m.
Mr Woods said: "Hopefully, there should be increasing awareness of all sorts of sports and activities, so we should see a big increase then."
