Giant vegetable expert is headhunted
Clive Bevan is set to travel to China to share his insider knowledge of growing massive vegetables after Government representatives headhunted him.
Mr Bevan, of Millers Park, Wellingborough, was visited by people from a company representing the Chinese Government on Tuesday.
And the former gardens manager at Wellingborough Prison is now set to jet half way across the world to share his tips on growing huge vegetables.
Mr Bevan said: "We had a meeting and they want me to go to Bejing in June to give some people in China my little bit of knowledge of growing giant veg so they can grow some of their own and go o-n to display it in China as and when it grows."
Mr Bevan said it all started when a man called David Loh, dubbed the Melon Man, who carves vegetables, contacted him after seeing his website, which features pictures of some of his previous big veg successes.
Mr Bevan said: "He heard through the grapevine about me, that I go round the country giving talks to horticultural societies, and he contacted me to see if I would be interested in promoting myself at a big show coming up."
He said initially it was discussed whether he could grow some giant vegetables and Mr Loh carve them so they could then be transported to China for an exhibition in Tiananmen Square, Bejing, in June.
But Mr Bevan said the time it would take to fly the vegetables to China or transport them by sea, coupled with the temperatures the veg would encounter, meant it wouldn't be feasible.
Instead he is set to teach the Chinese the art of big vegetable growing on their own turf.
Mr Bevan said: "They want me to go across and show the Chinese people how to do it and give them a start because they want to grow their own giant veg out there.
"I will go through soil tips, types of seed, times to plant, what fertiliser to feed them with, how much water to give them, all the bits and pieces you need to grow giant vegetables.
"I am very pleased to be asked. Obviously there's one or two bits of protocol to go through first and if it goes to plan, they want me to go across in June."
