Get set for month of fun and games

Corby's play leaders have been taking extra training sessions ahead of a summer packed with activities.

Corby Council's SHAPE programme is returning for its fifth year after more than 5,000 people took part in the summer scheme in 2009.

Play leaders completed a three-day training course at the end of last week in preparation for the jam-packed five weeks of activities offered to Corby youngsters over the summer holidays.

There will be 350 sessions at 15 venues for five to 13-year-olds as part of the SHAPE programme, which stands for Sport, Health, Arts, Playleadership, Education and Environment.

Activities include music technology, arts and crafts, heritage activities, singing, junk percussion, athletics, tennis, football, rounders and games.

Corby Council's lead member for community, Cllr John McGhee, said: "SHAPE is an amazing programme for young people in Corby and continues to fill their holidays with fun. We are very pleased to again offer popular sessions to our young residents that keep them busy in their holidays, introduce them to new and different activities and help them make new friends."

The sessions are run by the council's 27 play leaders.

The three days of extra training covered important issues such as the Every Child Matters programme, Safe Operations in Playscheme, First Aid and an example of games that can be used in sessions.

SHAPE started yesterday and runs until Friday, August 21.

The two-hour sessions cost 1 each and take place from 10am to midday and from 2pm to 4pm at a variety of venues around the town from Monday to Friday.

Under-eights must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when arriving and leaving the sessions.
