Gas inspector jailed for fake inspection
A gas safety inspector who signed off a boiler at a Northamptonshire pub when it was leaking carbon monoxide has been jailed for 18 weeks.
Kevin Burdon, 34, of Froxhill Crescent, Brixworth, who is a CORGI-registered engineer, had never been to The Butchers Arms in Greens Norton but still filled in a safety certificate that stated that a gas boiler and a heater had passed all the required safety tests.
Northampton Magistrates' Court heard yesterday that this certificate was passed on to Roland and Sarah Jones, who bought the lease of the pub from Christine Dukes in December 2007.
During the following month Mr Jones spent a lot of time deep cleaning the kitchen near to the boiler and suffered from terrible headaches, as well as nausea.
Burdon pleaded guilty to three breaches of the Trade Descriptions act 1968 and one breach of the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981 at Towcester Magistrates' Court in November.
