Fury as county wedding firm shuts down

Couples say they have been let down by a wedding supplies firm which has shut up shop and stopped returning their calls.

Smedley Creations Ltd has cashed hundreds of pounds of cheques over the last few weeks but its shop in Station Road, Desborough, is locked, its phone is disconnected, its website has been taken down and the company is not replying to emails.

Sarah Wright, from Well Lane, Rothwell, resigned as director and secretary on Wednesday, leaving her husband James as sole director.

Leyla Stevenson, 23, and Neil Goffage, 34, from Rothwell, have paid the company 350 for 100 chair covers but have since been told Smedley Creations would not supply them.

Mr Goffage, 34, said: "We feel cheated – it is an absolute disgrace, especially on the most important day of your life. It's the last thing you need. When Leyla found out she rang me up and she was in a right state."

Miss Stevenson, 23, said: "We were distraught because the wedding is quite soon."

Jo Dangerfield and her fiance paid 370 in May for seat covers for their wedding at the Sharnbrook Hotel near Rushden in September.

Miss Dangerfield has been trying to get in touch with Smedley Creations since the start of August but has been unsuccessful. She said: "That's the bad thing. Companies go bust but you expect them to send you a letter or give you a call."

Smedley Creations also supplied chair covers for Claire Smith and her husband Giles, who got married at Rushton Hall in July.

They returned from their honeymoon to find the company had cashed the 100 damage deposit.

Surprised that the full 100 had been cashed for a few pounds worth of damage, the couple tried to contact Smedley Creations.

Mrs Smith said: "When it got to two or three weeks down the line we thought there was something fishy. I'm fairly angry."

Companies House said Smedley Creations has not gone into administration but it will be struck off its list of limited companies soon because it has failed to file accounts since starting up in February 2008.

Miss Stevenson received a letter last week saying that Smedley Creations, which has headed paper boasting about offering "the personal touch", had ceased trading on Monday, August 10.

Neither Miss Dangerfield nor Mr and Mrs Smith received the letter.

The Evening Telegraph has discovered the company owes 2,795 in outstanding county court judgements to companies or individuals. On Thursday credit rating company Creditsafe rated it as "high risk".

Smedley Creations refused to comment.
