Funds end for health scheme in Kettering

Plans on how to keep the county on track for a £1m bonus for sport after funding for one initiative stops are to be discussed.

To get the windfall from Sport England, the number of people in Northamptonshire taking regular exercise has to rise by one per cent every year until 2011.

However, lottery funding for KeepHealthy@Kettering, a successful initiative that has got people in Kettering exercising, is to stop next year.

Kettering Council's executive committee will meet on Wednesday to decide how to keep people in the town exercising despite the end of the funding.

Shaun Birdsall, chief co-ordinator of KeepHealthy@Kettering, said: "It won't necessarily end up with it running in a reduced state.

"We could keep it going and even expand it further.

"The good thing is that a lot of the programmes are sustainable."

KeepHealthy@Kettering's main services are targeted at families with young children and older people and include tai chi, old-time dancing and after-school sessions.

It helped the borough jump from the bottom quarter of local councils for sport participation in 2006 to above the national average of 21 per cent last year.

The percentage of adults in Kettering exercising for at least 30 minutes three times a week was 22.3 per cent in 2007-2008, according to Sport England's Active People survey, an increase of three per cent on the previous year's study.

Kettering and Corby were the only towns in the north of the county to reach the target set by Sport England last year.

Participation in sport in Corby increased by one per cent to 20 per cent. In Wellingborough it fell from 20.2 per cent to 18.9 per cent and in East Northamptonshire it plummeted from 23 per cent to 17.2 per cent.

The executive committee has been recommended to ask the Local Strategic Partnership to find ways to maintain the momentum generated by KeepHealthy@Kettering.
