A group which is promoting healthy eating in Corby is on the look-out for land to grow food.

The Community Food Co-operative in Corby runs a gardening club and a luncheon club and hopes to expand.

It is based at Stuart Road Community Centre, in the town, and recently celebrated a £11,000 boost – £9,270 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme and £2,000 from Northamptonshire Community Foundation.

Elizabeth Adongo, the programme co-ordinator for the co-operative, said: “We are doing well so far but would like to do a lot more.

“We will only be as successful as the volunteers we have working for us and, although we have a great team, we would like more people to become involved.

“We are hoping to find an area of land where we could have poly-tunnels to grow food and if any local landowner or farmer could help out we would be pleased to hear from them.

“With land we could do so much more. We would like to operate a scheme where we could deliver organically-grown produce to people’s homes.”

At the luncheon club, which runs from 12.30pm until 2pm on Monday and Wednesdays, vegetarian dishes from Britain and other parts of the world are served.

The food co-operative costs £1 per household to join and members can take part in cooking and other social activities, as well as a gardening club.

On Thursday Corby MP Louise Mensch visited the co-operative and praised its volunteers.

She said: “The volunteers are doing a terrific job and if the co-operative is able to find some land locally to expand I’m sure it’s something young people in the town would love to get involved in.

“I will certainly do all I can to help them find a site. Growing food and eating healthy food should be promoted.”

@subcomandante No idea what she has done for Corby- IF anything - but on the other hand at least she isn't claiming she did everything good that has happened in Corby from 1997 to 2010 (inclusive) as someone else seemed to do !!!!!!!!!!!

@Ray - I thought the same, but the constant criticism she receives isn't baseless though is it? Can anyone, even her party supporters, point to anything she's achieved for Corby or East Northants since becoming MP? It wouldn't be so apparent if she didn't court the media for her own means so much. In this story for example, would she like to buy a plot of land for this co-operative, I mean she's a millionaire so she's not short of a few bob.

She also looks like she's leaning to the left ! Perhaps she could raffle the 'golden-touched' cabbage .

This story has been here most of the day and, so far, nobody has had a 'pop' at Louise Mensch. Must be a record ;-)
