Floats line up for 60th carnival day

The people of Kettering should support their town's 60th carnival on Saturday, organisers have said.

So far, 15 floats are lined up to take part in the parade, with a number of organisations in the town giving their backing to the charity event.

Organisers are hoping that the streets will be lined with people cheering on the carnival.

It starts at 1pm in Stamford Road and will make its way along Montagu Street, Dalkeith Place, Bowling Green Road, High Street, Northall Street and Rockingham Road.

It will finish at the Rockingham Road Pleasure Park, where there will be stalls and entertainment.

And for the first time, the carnival parade includes a vintage car rally in a bid to boost interest in the event.

Wicksteed Park will be used as a meeting point for the cars to set off from.

Proceeds from the carnival are given to charities for the blind in the area and after 2,000 was raised last year, there are hopes that can be matched again on Saturday.

Carnival secretary Richard Garry said the number of floats lined up to take part had already exceeded last year's total.

He said: "We have a few additions this year, as well as the regulars like the Harlequin pub.

"I don't know what any of the themes are – it's going to be a surprise on the day.

"We would urge people to come along and support this local event.

"It's important for the town."

The carnival court will be made up of carnival queen Emily Bunce, 16, carnival princess 15-year-old Kayomi Patterson, junior queen Constance Childs, 10, and 10-year-old junior princess Jade Ori-Orison.
