Fitness for mind and body at club

A Taekwon-do club is the latest group to sign up to the Evening Telegraph's Fit for Life campaign.

Ian Hawdon, who instructs Kettering Taekwon-do Club, said the Korean martial art can not only help with physical fitness levels but can also help ensure your mind is fit as well.

Mr Hawdon, 43, of Duke Street, Kettering, said: "It's not just kicking and punching. It helps with mental things too. It's a good body and mind work out."

Mr Hawdon, who is qualified as an international referee and instructor, said the discipline has helped his son combat dyspraxia, a disability that can affect movement and coordination because brain messages are not properly transmitted to the body.

He said: "He has come on leaps and bounds. He is an A-grade student."

About 30 children and 20 adults train with the club three nights a week. Club members also take part in national and international competitions.

Mr Hawdon said taekwon-do was a good alternative for children uninterested in football, rugby and basketball.

He said: "It's something for everybody."

Mr Hawdon backed the Evening Telegraph's Fit for Life campaign, which encourages county residents to lead a healthier lifestyle.

He said: "It's about time someone did something local for Kettering and Northamptonshire. It's a good campaign. I see more people with obesity problems and kids are getting bigger. It's because they sit and play video games."

The club meets at Kettering Conference Centre between 7pm and 9pm on Tuesdays and at Kettering Buccleuch Academy between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Thursdays.

A children's session is held at St Andrew's Church Hall on Saturday between 2pm and 4pm. For more information call Mr Hawdon on 07840958693.
