Firm helps contain Japan nuclear leak threat
A fire at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan
A Corby firm is helping the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant contain the spread of radioactive material.
Spraylat International is supplying a special coating to the Japanese plant which prevents the escape of contamination from objects sprayed with it.
The firm, which is based on the Earlstrees industrial estate, was already in talks with the company which manages the plant prior to the earthquake and its products had been on trial there.
This programme has now been accelerated in the wake of the earthquake.
Additional samples, which include a weather-resistant coating, have now been shipped to Japan as the authorities look at ways of protecting the plant and the surrounding area.
Japan yesterday raised the severity rating of its nuclear crisis to the highest level, seven, although the amount of radiation released is only a tenth of that emitted during the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
Spraylat’s managing director Andrew Keir said the contract would be a substantial one for the firm.
He said: “We are very pleased to be involved. Obviously it is in sad circumstances, but we are pleased to offer help if we can.
“We have been working with a research business which supplies the plant since the start of the year.
“Our product effectively prevents the escape of radiation. It is very specialised, and it is used in a number of sectors including construction and marine.
“The situation in Fukushima remains a very serious one and we hope that we can help the site’s owners limit the spread of radioactive contamination.”
Spraylat employs 10 staff and has been trading in Corby since 1998.
The company was established in 1992 and has been supplying the nuclear sector and organisations such as British Nuclear Fuels with peelable protective coatings for more than a decade.
The company is also involved in the London 2012 Olympics and will be providing a temporary coating for advertising banners in sports stadiums.
They are sprayed on to enable temporary banners to be put on top, and once the games are finished the coating simply peels off.
The company is hoping to be involved with the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand later this year with the same product.
