Firework terror at Corby home

Terrified occupants of a Corby house woke to find their hallway smoke-logged after a firework was pushed through their letterbox.

They say their home could have been set alight after the rocket skidded a few metres along the carpet before it came to a standstill and lay smouldering near a mattress and some shoes.

The letterbox of the home in Sturton Walk has been left charred and warped from the firework – believed to be a rocket.

Resident Tomas Zahar, 25, a labourer, said he woke to find the hallway filled with smoke.

He said: "I was asleep when it happened. My friend woke me and I was laughing at first because I thought it was a joke. But then the smell hit me.

"We could have all been killed. I have had enough and I want to move away."

He said one of his housemates woke up to discover the missile on fire and put it out.

Another resident, Sandro Santos, 24, said: "I was asleep at the time but when I woke up I saw the hall was filled with a lot of smoke.

"The firework burned the carpet and landed near a mattress, some boots and a vacuum cleaner.

"We are terrified and we're not sure if this will happen again."

It is believed vandals had been letting fireworks off outside the front door of the property in the early hours before one was pushed through the door.

The arson attack comes after a similar incident last month, when pregnant Marie Davies, 29, of Swinburne Road, Wellingborough, had a lit firework pushed through her letterbox as she put her two children to bed.

Police and firefighters condemned the mindless actions of those responsible for the latest incident.

White watch crew manager at Corby Fire Station Jason Lister said: "This could have caused a tremendous amount of damage." He said the incident would be treated as arson.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: "Luckily no one was injured in this incident.

"Clearly this could have resulted in much more serious consequences should a fire have started.

"We would urge anyone who may know who committed this crime to contact us immediately."

Anyone with information about the incident, which happened at about 3.40am on Monday, is asked to contact police on 08453 700700.
